Just received my Cr-48

Just received a Cr-48 (Chrome OS Pilot Notebook) from UPS today, totally unexpected. What an awesome surprise for the holidays!  I should have guessed when the box weighted about 6 lbs. and had no return address (other than the UPS store.)  The box inside the shipping box -- which I hope they carry over to retail -- was hilarious.  Pictures after the jump break.

The first thing that surprised me about Chome OS was its speediness.  I've been running my own Chromium OS developer builds for a few months now, and they don't feel nearly as fast.  Of course, they're running on a slightly slower Atom processor and a $11 USB drive instead of an SSD.  Still, you wouldn't expect to see such a difference.  Maybe the build's been customized specifically for the Cr-48 harware?  Or maybe this version's just ahead of the Open Source project.

Immediately after logging in myself, I conned my wife into also logging into her Google account.  For someone that's used to running a Quad-core Windows 7 machine, I was happy to see her take a liking to the netbook.  She likes the touchpad much better than that of my Eee PC, and our old Toshiba laptop.  The only weird experience I've had with the touchpad has been right-clicking, which I can only seem to accomplish by lightly tapping both sides of the bottom of the pad at the same time.  Then again, I'm not current on touchpad gestures, so maybe this is normal.

I'm going to continue to use Cr-48 as my only machine, complimented only by my HTC Hero running Android.  I'll still have to use Windows PCs at work, but only long enough to fix them for my customers.  I'll try to keep this blog updated semi-daily with my experiences.  Please, post questions or contact me through my Google Profile, and I'll do my best to get back to you quickly.
